weight graph

For the past year, I've been sporadically tracking my weight on a google spreadsheet. I thought it would prove useful for looking at long term trends and associating any changes in weight with certain phases of my life or any particular habits.

After the marathon, I thought it would be interesting to plot the results and see if I had lost any weight from the 5 months spent running ~30 miles a week. And the answer is... NO!

Shown below is the weight data for approximately the past year, starting from mid-January. (Notice the undefined values for the y-axis, hehe.) I am happy with the apparent downward trend. However, it appears that marathon training did nothing for weight loss. In fact, looking at the timing of the decrease, I think the biggest factor was the decision to walk to school every day rather than take the shuttle. This is pretty surprising to me.

Of course, I also have to mention that I have not dieted. I generally try to eat healthily but I definitely also indulge. During marathon training, I would have a boba milk tea about 2 times a week and also eat a ton of pasta on Friday nights. So, I can't say that I was being particularly weight conscious. =P

Now for the hardest part. Hellooo holiday season... ;)

Congratulations on the downward trend :) Have you tried measuring yourself in addition to weighing in? I have been tracking my exercise, meals out, and desserts for a little more than a year now. I weigh myself and take waist/hip measurements (because I don't care about my boobs, haha) every six months. The first six months I lost 18 pounds effortlessly because I stopped eating gluten and dairy; the second six months I reintroduced those but also ramped up the exercise -- I gained 3 pounds, but I lost 1.5 inches around my waist. I bet you'd find you're trimmer all around post-marathon, even if the scale doesn't show anything. :) Boba and pasta don't sound like particularly decadent indulgences to me!

Ooh. Love the graph, particularly the life event indicators! :) Yes! I'm a big fan of walking as a easy natural component to overall fitness.

May be too abstract, but I wonder if you should track "mood" to see how the weight correlates.

And/or sleep! That's a heavy corrlation for me.

hahaha thanks for the support ladies! i figure i gotta put my skills at making figures to some good use. ;)

lisa, that is a good idea about the waist and hip measurements. i just need to get a tape measure for that, and then maybe i can incorporate that in for 2010. =) and wow, that is an awesome amount of weight and inches lost, congrats! yes, inches are what counts!

yes i would bet my weight correlates inversely with sleep and mood. and it definitely runs on a monthly cycle as well. ;) i wish i was better at consistently tracking these things! too many factors...

alison!! make a graph!! i would love to see the increasing trend with the passing weeks (and then the sudden loss of 7+ lbs when baby comes out, hehe). =D so exciting!

Tape measures aren't too hard to find, but you can always use string and then lay it down next to a ruler to check the measurement. :)
